Why do people desire to have children? I wonder what the true answer is in most cases. I doubt a lot of people all share the thought that it's a means of populating the earth, or for any spiritual fulfillment. I know of people that want/have kids because they think it will change things for better/add the love they need in their life. Thoughts?

That's so funny, I just asked that question in buddhists a few days ago. Some interesting answers there, the main page is down at the moment so I can't find the exact link. I think it was within the past two weeks.

I'll admit that my own thoughts are fairly cynical - I can't think of one good reason to have a kid. Every reason presented to me seems at least a bit selfish, idealistic, or both.

I was surprised that some people were funky about that question.

I can relate to this: "I like seeing their development and
like helping them develop. I like teaching." But that's something you can do with other's kids. I like kids & being around them, & their energy and all. But for purely selfish reasons, I don't want them. And I don't feel bad for feeling selfish, because I think too many people want them for the wrong reasons. I feel if it's meant to be, I'll be enlightened with that notion.
